The disciples of Emmaus

Fourth encounter :

The Risen Jesus with the disciples of Emmaus according to St Luke's Gospel, chapter 24, verses 13 to 35.

"... And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to them. With that, their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight. Then, they said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the way and opened the scriptures to us?" So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem.

They found gathered together the eleven and those with them who were saying, "The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon". Then the two recounted what had taken place on the way and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Holy Scripture, the Word of God, the celebration of the Eucharist, the breaking of the bread, the profession of faith by the eleven and the disciples of Emmaus are the foundations upon which rests the conviction of our faith in the resurrection of Jesus.

The disciples of Emmaus represent us. At the outset of their experiences, there is discouragement, questioning, a collapse following the death of Jesus. Their spirits are confused. Their hearts are slow in understanding the meaning of the events. Jesus explains the Scriptures to them. The word with a capital "W" enlightens the meaning of the events, the interior questions. Light finally appears. They accept to live within thimage of the ascensione Church their journey with the Risen One.

Prayer : Through your Eucharist in ecclesia, you want to meet me, take upon yourself my misery in order to offer it with yourself in intercession to our Father. You want to bring us together as one family, the family of God's children. You enlighten us by your Word. You want to come in contact with our hearts, to penetrate us, to nourish us with yourself in order to breathe into us your life in all of our actions. You make yourself present in order to remain permanent, drawing us to you and giving us the desire to have multiple encounters and allowing us to give witness of you for ... You are alive.
